Knowing what your skin type is means you can focus on skincare that is beneficial for your skin
Your skin type is determined by how much — or how little — oil your skin produces.
Genetics , your diet , stress , medication and even how you take care of your skin determine how much oil your skin produces.
There’s no point in spending money on skin-care products if they are not suitable for your particular skin type and if you don’t know what skin type you are, how can you be sure you’re using the right products. Knowing your skin type will help you pick the right product s for your skin and helps you to provide your skin with the best care.
There are five basic skin care types:
- Oily: Oily skin tends to shiny with enlarged pores, and is prone to blackheads and blemishes. You might experience some tightness.
- Combination: This skin type has medium pores, a smooth and even texture, good circulation, healthy color, dry to normal on the cheeks and around the eye area while being oily in the t-zone (the area that stretches from the forehead down to the nose and chin) .
- Sensitive: Sensitive skin tends to be thin, delicate with fine pores. It flushes(sudden reddening) easily, is prone to broken capillaries*, is frequently allergic and can be rashy. This type of skin gets irritated easily and can go very red and blotchy. This type will have a lot more trouble to environmental factors and tends to be very sensitive to cosmetics.
- Dry: Dry skin feels tight, especially after cleansing. You have a tendency towards fine wrinkles, flaking and red patches. Your skin may appear ashy or dull from dead skin buildup.
- Normal skin: Normal Skin is the type of skin that we’d all love to have. This is the “healthy” type of skin. This type is the not too oily, not too dry type, characterized by few blemishes, generally firm and smooth with small pores. When you pull the skin away from the bony structure, it springs back to normal position.
*Broken capillaries occur when the capillary cell walls become weakened and sever or break. On facial skin it is common around the nose and cheeks and appears as fine wavy red lines.
Routine Skin Care Practices
The products you use for your skin are depended on the skin type. In the coming “beauty tip” posts, we will be looking at skin care for specific skin types. If you have very sensitive skin or you suffer from allergic reactions, it is advisable to visit a dermatologist, so that they can recommend specific practices for your skin
Below are general routine skin care practices:-
- Cleansing your skin is really the foundation of a healthy skin care routine. Surprisingly, most people go overboard in this area. Whether you have oily, normal or combination skin, it is important to clean your facial skin without stripping it of naturally occurring oils that are important for younger looking skin.
- Wash at night to remove makeup and debris with a cleanser for your skin type. Cleanse by using a small amount of cleanser and rinsing your skin with lukewarm water. Pat dry. In the morning, simply splash a bit of lukewarm water on your face to remove any excess oils from the night’s moisturizer. Remember: never use hot or cold water to wash your face, as either one can cause broken capillaries and make your skin appear blotchy.
- Exfoliation is often overlooked when it comes to skin care, but it is an essential step to keep you looking young.
- Moisturizing your skin is a wonderful way to remain looking young and have soft skin as well. Even if you have oily facial skin, be sure to use a light moisturizer, even if it’s only a little each time. Make sure to apply a moisturizer all over after you’re out of the bath or shower.
- Give yourself a facial at home once a week or so. There are several facial “recipes” out there.
- Sunscreen is a must and probably the most important step when it comes to protecting our skin from harmful environmental factors. Make certain to use a sunscreen or moisturizer containing at least 15 SPF and apply it daily to every area that is exposed to the sun.
- Believe it or not, proper nutrition and ample amounts of rest contribute to healthy skin and hair, so make sure to get the proper amounts of vitamins, minerals and nutrients in your food
