Tea Tree Oil for Dry, Flaky, Oily, Itchy Scalp, Dandruff Treatment

Tea tree essential oil is a powerful antibacterial agent that helps treat problems that affect the scalp such as dandruff, acne, and dry, flaky skin. Unlike scalp products that often contain the harsher benzoyl peroxide, tea tree oil cleanses and moisturizes without drying skin out.

As an antibacterial, you can use tea tree oil to cleanse away any build up on your scalp. This build-up can dry out your scalp and cause dandruff. In fact, many of the scalp treatments that use tea tree oil can also be used to treat skin that is dry and irritated from shaving and harsh shaving products.

A simple hot oil treatment on the scalp using tea tree oil can cleanse and moisturize without damaging side effects. Massaging the scalp with a tea tree oil treatment will reduce the inflammation that prevents hair growth by stimulating blood flow.

These types of scalp treatments, however, should not contain just tea tree oil as that can cause scalp irritation and dryness.  You should mix it with carrier oils, water, and other substances as you will see in the recipes that follow.

Tea Tree Essential Oil for curing dandruff

  • Mix 30 drops of tea tree essential oil with 100ml of shampoo

  • Leave for 10 -15 minutes

Using tea tree to promote hair growth

Tea tree is a natural remedy that promotes hair growth by dealing with hair/scalp related issues that may lead to hair loss, removes dead cells, and unblock hair follicles.  It moisturizes hair and keeps the scalps free from bacterial and fungal infections.

Using 100% pure tea tree essential oil at home for hair growth is easy.  Below are some of the ways you can use tea tree oil to promote hair growth.

Please note that it’s not advisable to use pure tree oil directly on your scalp as it may lead to irritation or allergic reactions.

1.  Tea Tree Oil with Carrier Oil

This process is used for hair growth, hair loss, head lice, itchiness, dandruff, and dryness. Carrier oils include avocado oil, olive oil, almond oil, vegetable oil, and jojoba oil. Tea tree oil mixed with a carrier oil clears dandruff and fights fungus.

This combination moisturizes and nourishes hair, adding a protective layer resistant to toxins and promoting hair growth.

  •     Mix 10 drops of warm tea tree oil and 1 teaspoon of any carrier oil.
  •     Apply to the scalp and gently massage for 5 – 10 minutes.
  •     Wrap head in a hot towel to open clogged pores.
  •     Leave for 10 – 15 minutes and wash with shampoo.
  •     Repeat regularly for the best results.
  •     Note: Feeling a tingling sensation is completely normal.

2.      Tea tree with your shampoo or conditioner

Use one drop of tea tree oil for every 30 ml of shampoo or conditioner. Add the oil directly into the bottle, close the bottle, and shake it to mix. Do not apply undiluted tea tree oil directly onto your scalp.

3.       Tea tree with rosemary oil

These oils have antibacterial, antiseptic, and antioxidant properties that stimulate healthy hair growth and heal many scalp problems such as dryness and flakiness.

  •     Mix drops of tea tree oil, rosemary oil, and any carrier oil (jojoba or coconut oil).
  •     Apply to the scalp and gently massage for 5 – 10 minutes.
  •     Leave for 2 – 3 hours and rinse with hot water.
  •     Repeat twice weekly for best results.

4.       Tea tree with coconut oil

Both coconut oil and tea tree oil have anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties that prevent scalp itchiness, dandruff, scalp folliculitis, scalp eczema, and scalp fungus.

  •     Mix 10 drops of tea tree oil and a tablespoon of extra virgin coconut oil until melted.
  •     Apply to the itchy scalp and gently massage for 5 – 8 minutes.
  •     Leave for a minimum of 2 hours.
  •     Wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner.
  •     Repeat regularly for the best results.
  •     Note: Apply before going to sleep and rinse in the morning for added results.

Mixing 10 drops of tea tree and coconut oil promotes hair growth.

5.       Tea tree with lavender oil

These oils have antibacterial properties that quickly heal itchy scalp, dandruff, and scalp psoriasis by conditioning and nourishing the hair and stimulating the deep layers of the skin.

  •     Shampoo your hair.
  •     Mix a few drops of tea tree oil and lavender oil.
  •     Apply to the scalp as a conditioner and gently massage for 4 – 7 minutes.
  •     Leave for 5 – 10 minutes and rinse with water.
  •     Repeat regularly for the best results.
